Exploring Sūrya: Evidence from Ṛgveda Saṃhitā
Abstract
The article studies three aspects of Sūrya as appeared in Ṛgveda Saṃhitā which are 1) the origin, appearance, location of residence and vehicle, 2) the role and 3) the power and abilities of Sūrya. It is found that Sūrya is the son of Heaven and Aditi. He has a golden head and red hair with bright aura. He resides in various locations and has a chariot which, some sources say, is harnessed by seven white horses. His power and capabilities are immense. His roles include the creator of the universe and its order, the soul of all beings, the origin of light for the earth and the universe, and the medium between human and angels. Another important role of Sūrya is the protector of the rites. It can be stated that he is a god who is capable of realising all human’s wishes.
