The Role of Buddhism in Reducing Social Inequality
Abstract
This academic article intends to reflect on the state of inequality within the social context from a Buddhist perspective. Buddhism views social inequality as the consequence of karma accumulated by individuals in past lives. This inequality, therefore, occurs naturally and follows the law of karma, which dictates that those who have performed good deeds will receive good results, while those who have committed bad deeds will suffer the consequences. Buddhism also teaches people to let go of attachments to various things, including social status and wealth, as these are merely impermanent constructs. Once one can relinquish these attachments, they will not feel distressed by inequality. However, Buddhism does not advocate surrendering to inequality but rather emphasizes self-development and helping others. It encourages self-reliance without dependence on others. Additionally, Buddhism promotes compassion and kindness toward others, especially the poor and underprivileged. Helping others in this way contributes to reducing social inequality and creating a more caring society. Moreover, Buddhism stresses the importance of education and self-development, as education provides people with the knowledge and skills necessary to elevate their own lives and reduce social inequality.
